Freedecor Glossary
We've been in the print industry for over 15 years, but we understand that many of our customers don't have the same experience when it comes to dealing with printing work. So to help you understand all the jargon that comes with it, we've written this helpful glossary for you to 'cut out and keep'!
A
- A-Sized Paper - For example A4, A5, A6. Different sizes of paper are better for certain jobs. At Freedecor, we use a large variety so you can be sure we'll always have right expertise to create high quality print work.
B
- Bleeds - When you want your artwork to extend right to the edges of the page without any margin or white space, you should extend the artwork over the edge of the page by a couple of mm. This is known as a bleed.
C
- CMYK - This stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key, otherwise known as the Four Process Colours. These are the four standard colours used for mixing colours required from printing.
- Crop - This is the name of the method of trimming the print to the required size.
- Crop Marks - These are lines determining the area on the artwork to crop/trim.
D
- DPI - Otherwise known as Dots Per Inch. This shows the number of dots a device can put into a inch. Higher values give better, smoother output.
G
- GSM - This stands for Grams per Square Metre, and is the standard way of measuring paper weight.
L
- Lithographic - The method used to print using plates for a press, rather than using modern Digital Printing methods.
P
- Point - A type of measurement used in printing. Usually represents 1/72 of an Inch. Generally, fonts are measured in terms of points.
- Proof - A printed copy that is given to the customer for approval, before completion of the job.
R
- Resolution - This a measurement of the amount of detail in a given image. This is measured in PPI (pixels per inch) when on screen, and DPI (dots per inch) when on paper.
